Doña Cien Besitos de la Noche, 2002, Acrylic, Ink and Pencil on Paper, 51"x80"
Photography by Judy Reed
Doña Cien was a breakthrough piece because it educated me on the difference between a cartoon and an illustration. I found that if I rendered, adding shadows and highlights, the sketch became an illustration. If I didn't render the sketch and just made the outline bold, the sketch became a cartoon. This is when I realized that cartoons were minimal drawings. The outline became the dominant feature in my cartoon. I realized that the outline is most important to me, and is all I need to represent an image.
