Glyphtoons are my way of understanding language and trying to create my own. Whenever I put a cartoon next to a letter, word or group of words, I make a glyphtoon. They began as studies: simple doodles over magazine articles or flyers. I would find an interesting layout and go over it with markers. I drew the cartoons first. But the words dominated the cartoons and so I filled in parts of the cartoon with one or two colors to create space. The cartoon still lacked something, and that something was energy. So I transformed the space with rhythmic shapes, outlines, doodles and letters. The effect had an animated quality which I liked very much. |
