My first glyphtoon was created while working collaboratively with Nicole Repack for the “Las Dos Rokstars” exhibit at Pond Gallery. We work intuitively: One of us will draw on a piece of paper and hand the art piece over to the other, and go back and forth like that a couple of times until the piece is done, you know, kind of like the way Surrealists invented the exquisite corpse. Nicole does most of the lettering and I do the cartooning. We fuse our ideas together usually over found objects such as pages and ads from discarded magazines. Sometimes we make a personal commentary of the ad by dissing it or complimenting it with menacing or smiling cartoons and words. The idea of taking graffiti and abstracting formal issues like depth and space, with cartoons and letters, has liberated us from the stereotype of graffiti as vandalism and cartooning as family entertainment.
