LEGENDS FROM THE REALM OF NEPANTLA 2007-2017
“LEGENDS FROM THE REALM OF NEPANTLA" is series of oil and pastel paintings of a modern myth using myself as the muse. They wear ski masks and military uniforms as symbols of conflict and when dressed in lingerie, they become archetypes protesting shame and guilt.
Nepantla is a 16th century word, meaning,"in the middle of it", that was coined by the Aztecs while undergoing the conquest. I realize that I too exist in a nepantlic environment undergoing a personal conquest. For me, this word has explained my own history of ancestral and generational trauma, giving me the opportunity to transcend it. "
