LEGENDS FROM THE REALM OF NEPANTLA 2007-2017
“LEGENDS FROM THE REALM OF NEPANTLA" is series of oil and pastel paintings of a modern myth of several contemporary female archetypes that are overcoming blame shame and guilt. The ski masks and military uniforms has become a universal symbols of conflict.
Nepantla is a 16th century Aztec word, meaning,"in the middle", that they coined undergoing the conquest. The Chicana writer, Gloria Anzaldúa redefined it, from her essay, "Toward a New Chicana Conciousness" to be, "torn between two ways", describing the immigrant experience of Mexican Americans. For me, this word has explained my own ancestral trauma, giving me the opportunity to transcend it.
