BETWEEN WORLDS: STORIES PAINTED FROM NEPANTLA
My art is a vibrant tapestry woven from the threads of current conflicts with the power of feminist spirituality to create a contemporary mythology that heals. Through my paintings, I create from within my own personal experiences with shame, unconditional love, and global change.
My inspiration comes from writings of Gloria Anzaldúa and the ancient Aztec word of “nepantla”, that literally means “in the middle of it”. I was born in the middle of conflict when the 1964 Civil Rights Act was first implemented. I feel that my work’s mission is to bring people together, thru conversations of childhood, generational and ancestral trauma in my art. In doing so, maybe we can recognize our resilience, in the face of the race and gender divide. For it’s not about the revolution, but about the evolution moving toward internal peace.
