BETWEEN WORLDS: STORIES PAINTED FROM NEPANTLA
I consider myself a contemporary myth painter who specializes in nepantlic art. My art are allegorical oil paintings complete with archetypes that represent suffering and healing at the crossroads of overcoming.
My inspiration comes from writings of Chicana writer Gloria Anzaldúa of her definition of nepantla, "torn between ways" and the ancient Nahua word of “nepantla”, that literally means “in the middle of it”. I was born in the middle of conflict when the 1964 Civil Rights Act was first implemented and find myself again in modern times in an awkward internal struggle of in-betweenness within our divided and polarized world.
The mission of my paintings is to create contemporary legends to address ancestral, generational and current traumas and its shame, unconditional love in a climate of global change. For it’s not about the revolution, but about the evolution toward internal peace.
